ORAL HYGIENE - The packing is a bandage designed to cover the surgical site during healing. On the first day, avoid extremely hot foods which may soften the packing. As the packing hardens, pieces may break away. This is of no concern unless the exposed area becomes uncomfortable. Call if you are having this problem.
To clean the surgical site after the first day, rinse for 30 seconds twice daily with either Peridex, Periogard, or Chlorhexidine 0.12% for the first 3 weeks after surgery. Also, by brushing the top of your tongue and not smoking, you will keep your mouth feeling fresh and avoid bad breath. DO NOT brush the surgical site until advised. Clean the rest of your mouth as you usually do.
DIET - Do your chewing on the side opposite the surgery. For your comfort, a softer diet should be used at first. If you find eating difficult, add a liquid supplement (Instant Breakfast, Ensure, Boost) to your diet. Alternatively, follow the menu tips.
DISCOMFORT - Current concepts of pain control include use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID's ) such as Anaprox (Naprosyn) PRIOR TO and AFTER surgery. NSAID's reduce inflammation and swelling, as well as pain, and have no narcotic side effects. In some cases an antibiotic will also be prescribed to aid in the healing process.
SWELLING - Swelling and "bruising" may occur after the procedure. It can be minimized if an ice cube is gently rubbed outside the treated area soon after leaving the office. Ten minutes on and ten minutes off for a few hours is recommended. Heat in the form of hot compresses is useful in reducing swelling AFTER the first 24 hours. Bruising is more common after graft surgery. Do not be alarmed; the discoloration will resolve uneventfully.
BLEEDING - Small amounts of blood may discolor your saliva for several hours. This is normal. Do not spit or rinse your mouth during the first day. If bleeding does occur, place a moistened teabag over the area and press firmly for 10 minutes by the clock. Repeat once if necessary. Avoid excessive exertion, including aerobic exercise, for 48 hours.
In cases of extreme pain, swelling, bleeding or any unusual disturbance, please contact the office so that we may advise you. If we are not in, try to reach me, Dr. Greenfield at 617.965.0788.
