Treatment Instructions - What to Expect; What You Can Do
Taking Medications
We want your treatment to be as comfortable as possible. The following outlines what medications are customarily used and how and when they should be taken. You will receive your specific prescription prior to treatment. Always take medication with a full glass of water.
MEDICATIONS TO BEGIN TAKING THE DAY BEFORE SURGERY
Peridex or Periogard: These mouthrinses will significantly reduce the bacterial count in your mouth. Rinse twice daily with either prescription after thoroughly cleaning your mouth. Optimal times are after breakfast and before bedtime. These rinses may temporarily alter taste perception and create a slight stain on the teeth which can be polished off. Switch to Listerine if your notice stain developing.
Amoxicillin: This antibiotic is often the drug of choice for certain types of periodontal infections. It is generally taken three times daily.
MEDICATIONS TO BEGIN TAKING THE DAY OF SURGERY
Anaprox or Motrin: These are non-steroidal anti-inflammatory (NSAID) medications which do not contain aspirin and offer pain relief comparable to a narcotic when taken prior to the surgery! Start this prescription at least an hour before surgery, and continue every 6 to 8 hours until the six tablets are finished. After two days, a non-prescription medication such as Advil, Tylenol, or Ibuprofen or Aleve, may be substituted if necessary. These medications should be taken with food to avoid stomach irritation.
Medrol Dose Pack or Dexamethasone: These steroidal preparations are designed to minimize swelling after surgery. Take the medication according to the detailed instructions on the prescription label.
Valium: Take the tablet approximately 1 to 1 1/2 hours before surgery. DO NOT use alcohol or other sedatives. DO NOT drive while taking sedatives.
If you are allergic to any of the above medications, substitutes can be written. Questions? Please do not hesitate to ask the doctor or surgical assistant for additional explanation.
